Movement Projects Inc. (M.P.I.)
Movement Projects Inc. is a non profit educational organization founded in 1982 to develop, conduct, and disseminate movement education programs to help people deal with and recover from any form of injury, stress, trauma, and/or habitual attitudes and limitations. Movement education has been defined as a philosophy and a method for assisting people in gradually reducing the effects of accumulated stresses, including adaptations to injury, emotional attitudes and long term holding patterns, on their ability to function physically, mentally and emotionally. According to Judith Aston, originator of the Aston System, "the body you are wearing today may be more a reflection of who you were rather than who you are and who you can be." Aston-Patterning offers an educational process designed to assist the emerging body of the future. By coaching people to recognize physical holding patterns that limit choices and impose restrictions, Aston-Patterning allows clients to realize and use more of their potential self. Through the analysis of current structure and function, a person can be provided with a program that will teach him/her to problem solve and use his/her body effectively in any given situation.
Judith Aston
Judith Aston has been training people in her theories of movement since 1963. [Ms. Aston is a former college instructor of movement and dance for performing artists and athletes (1963-1972).] Many therapists come to train with Judith Aston because her holistic view of the body in motion is unique and immediately application to the health professional's scope of practice.
Her movement programs are much more than a series of exercises,
educating the individual in simple ideas applied to strengthening, toning, stretching and loosening exercises, plus actions of daily living, ergonomics, and walking. Participants learn how to find and maintain optimal posture/alignment for sitting, standing, and resting, with use of pillows or supports as needed.
